Wet and needle felted floral wall hanging

Wet felting can be a messy affair .... so it was a wonderful treat to be able to work outside on a glorious sunny summer day! I started out doing the basic wet felted design - then spent another lovely day on the deck, embellishing the piece with a bit of needle felting and beadwork.

Rug Hooked Chair Pads

I recently spent a wonderful week away - a few days in Kelowna with my brother and sister-in-law (Ken & Coleen); then off to Calgary for the wedding of my niece Kendal (daughter of my brother and sister-in-law Steve & Laura).  It was great to see the whole family - including mom! - all together.  But no matter where I go, my work goes with me.  I actually managed to hook these two chair pads while I was away - just in time for Thursday market when I returned home.

Hooked Rug

Here's my newest hooked rug; the sweet design was found in the stash of fabulous goodies purchased from a retired rug hooker. While this pattern was traditionally hooked in a more fine and formal manner, I chose a more primitive approach, using a wider cut and stronger colours. I photographed this piece at East of Eden Antiques. Hooked with wool on burlap, this piece measures approximately 33" x 23". $350 (plus shipping if applicable). Primitive Hooked Rug

In past posts, I've mentioned that I came into a wealth of rug hooking supplies, collected over the years by a woman in our community who is no longer hooking.  Among the treasures were several patterns.  Although I usually design my own patterns, this one particularly appealed to me - little did I know that this particular pattern had been designed by  fellow rug hooker, Wendy Zelsman!  No wonder it appealed to me - Wendy is a prolific rug hooker, and my "teacher"!  So credit goes to her for the whimsical design!

This rug has been my "life's work" for the past three months.  Hooked with recycled wool fabric on burlap, I especially enjoyed mixing in a variety of dark plaids to add extra depth to the flowers.  The piece measures 32 1/2" x 25 1/2" and would be a warm and wonderful addition to any room!

Cottage Style Rustic Window Headboard

I LOVE rustic old windows and have collected several over the years.  I turned this window into a sweet little headboard that would look lovely over a child's bed - or perhaps over a twin bed in a guest room.   A soft pink vintage fabric was affixed to the back of the window; pink ribbon and tiny pearl buttons finish it off!

Needle Felted Tangled Garden Wall Hanging

This is another in a series of "tangled garden" needle felted wall hangings.  Flowers and foliage collide in a tangle of colour....This piece deserves a spot in sunny room to catch the light from all the tiny beads that have been added as embellishments.

Textile Mixed Media Wall Hanging on Glass

Much like the wall hangings I recently designed on canvas, I decided to do similar work on glass. The glass was backed with lace; the design incorporates pieces cut from recycled textiles and linens, with beads added for embellishment.  The whole piece has been protected with a matte varnish, and framed in a rustic cream frame.  All ready to hang - loveliest in a window!

Textile Floral Wall Hanging

This is the third in a series of floral wall hangings I've designed using recycled fabrics.  Each piece in the design has been individually cut and machine appliqued to a light canvas background; the entire piece is then embellished with beading.  I personally think these hangings look especially pretty hung in a window so the light can shine through!

Rug Hooking 'Hit or Miss'

I've written about this before, but hit or miss designs are neither hit nor miss!  They are a great way to use up wool strips from past projects, but the term 'hit or miss' sounds very random.  In fact, it takes a lot of colour planning in order to make sure the final product is well balanced in colour and tone.  Here are two of my recent pieces - rug hooked hot pads - using this method.
