Rug Hooked Chair Pad

Just finished - a hooked chair pad in rich tones of plum and orange/yellows against a muted background.  This piece was hooked entirely with recycled wool fabric on burlap, and measures about 12 1/2" in diameter.

Peterborough Fibre Arts Festival

I'm looking forward to taking part in the upcoming Peterborough Fibre Arts Festival on April 5th!  It's my first event of 2014 - and an inspiring way to kick off the spring and summer market season.  For anyone interested in fibre arts of any kind, there will be lots to see, buy, and learn at this one day show.

Cheerful Mug Rugs

On this dark, drizzly March day, it was lovely working with this cheerful, spring green wool!  This "happy" set of coasters was made from a friend's beloved (but mistakenly shrunken) wool sweater.  I embellished the coasters with circles of my own hand-dyed wool, and turquoise machine stitching.

Craving Colour!

March is here, and although it's still cold and snowy, I've been craving the happy colours of spring and summer.  Since the garden will have to wait, my happy alternative is to use more cheerful colours in my work.

The design on this rug hooked hot pad was hooked on burlap with wool fabric; the background with plum coloured wool yarn.   The pattern is a heritage design found in a stash of recycled hooking supplies.

Rug Hooked Hot Pad

After spending many weeks working on the little red schoolhouse rug in my previous post, it was nice to take on a smaller piece.  These hot pads are great for using up my stash of cut wools from other projects, and I really enjoy the challenge of balancing colours and textures.

Little Red School House Hooked Rug

This little red school house rug is probably one of the more rustic, or primitive, pieces I've done. I think it's a sweet reminder of the good old days.

The pattern was found in a stash of recycled hooking supplies.  I added several inches to the design so it would work as a small floor rug if desired.  Measuring 27" x 17", it would be perfect for any little spot that needs a bit of warmth and colour.   SOLD

Wool "mug rugs"

What is it with me and circles!???  They certainly make their way into many of my projects.   These "mug rugs" (coasters) were made with a double layer of boiled wool, then embellished with a random machine stitch.  Several of the pieces incorporate hand-dyed wool to give a more interesting texture.

Primitive rug hooked hot pad

I usually create my own designs, but this pattern - an "heirloom" design from a company in Providence, R.I. - was salvaged some time ago from a barn full of old wool and burlap (!!).  I especially love the curlicue pattern of the tendrils surrounding the sunflower.  As always, the piece was hooked with recycled wool on burlap.

Boiled Wool Mug Rugs

I'm up to my eyeballs in half-finished projects so I decided to take today to tackle each of them one at a time - and try to stay focused!

Among the many items my neighbor Suzanne donated to me - contributions to my growing stash of fabulous fabrics and yarns - was a beautiful half-finished wool sweater with a lovely intricate pattern.  After felting the sweater in a hot wash, I turned the wool into these colourful double-layer "mug rugs" - and finished them off with a blanket stitch in a complementary colour.
