Cheerful Floral Collage

After a busy few weeks - including the 9th annual Christmas at the Marshland Centre in Lakefield (which was a great success), and a week of wallpaper stripping at a friend's newly purchased Century home  - I'm taking advantage of some quiet time to get back to my paper collages.  This very cheerful piece, mounted on plywood, incorporates bits of colourful stationery, tissue papers, and silk thread.  It measures 12" x 16"; and is all ready to hang.

Floral Paper Collage

Lace & Button Cuff Bracelets

"Can you use this Ruth?"  I get this question often, from friends and acquaintances who never get rid of anything before checking in with me first!  This time it was a roll of wide elastic - which gave me a great reason to dig through my stash of lace and buttons to make these dramatic cuff bracelets.   (I love to wear pieces like these with just a plain white shirt and jeans!) Each is $38/made to fit medium - large wrists.

This floral paper collage was created on a large piece of plywood.  I loved working with my stash of tissue papers and fancy pieces of stationery - and just letting loose with the design. The piece measures 25" x 18"; it's been sealed, and is ready to hang.

Paper & Mixed Media Collage

I've always been interested in mixed media collage - but my first true attempt at the art was just a few months ago when I took a half-day introductory class at the Peterborough Art School.  I was hooked!  I dug through my stash of fabulous papers - and started going to work on stretched canvas.    Torn papers, laces, book pages .... lots of glue and sealers!  What a happy mess!

Felted Wall Hanging

On this cold, rainy Halloween morning, I'm ready to accept that my days of wet felting outdoors are over for the season.  Moving indoors, furnace on and all cozy, I'm ready for other creative pursuits!  That said, the background of this piece was felted on a warm summer day.  The Queen Anne's Lace floral bouquet was needle-felted, and machine embellished.  It's a simple, light and airy piece that would look especially lovely in a sunny, light-filled room.

Hooked Rug

I've enjoyed working on some much bigger projects than normal this summer.  This primitive-style rug measures 33" x 24 1/2".  It's been worked primarily in earth tones, but the pops of orange and blue really bring it to life!

Wet Felted Wall Hanging

I call this wall hanging "fireflies in the garden" ... because of the way the way beads in the centres of the flowers catch the light.  The piece was wet felted on a warm sunny fall day a couple of weeks ago - then embellished with machine stitching and beads.

Rug Hooking - a few projects finished at last!

I've been jumping from project to project lately .... as a result, I ended up with several half-finished pieces, which "drives me crazy"!   So, with the weather turning chilly and gray, I spent a few cozy days at home, finishing things up!  What a good feeling!  Now I can get started on some new projects... A hooked rug is also among the newly finished projects and a pic will follow shortly.

Wet Felted Poppy Wall Hanging

The results of another beautiful warm day!  Unfortunately, the weather is turning now, but it's been a wonderful treat to be able to work outside.  This cheerful poppy wall hanging design was wet felted, then embellished with machine stitching for added dimension.  Happily, it was sold yesterday at the Lakefield Farmers' Market!

Primitive/Traditional Hooked Wool Rug

Although the pattern on this rug is called "hit or miss",the technique is really an exercise in precision and balance.   Hooked in rich tones of burgundy/wine - and balanced with shades of gray and pops of colour - I'm thrilled with the end result!

Wet Felted Floral Wall Hanging

Well, as long as the sun keeps shining and the days are warm, I'll keep felting!  It's such a wet, soapy (and, in my case, sloppy) process, it's lovely to be able to work outside.   I suspect the warm colours in this piece were inspired by the touches of orange and red that are starting to creep into the trees.

I seem to be going bigger and bigger with my work - perhaps a felted rug is in my future?? This piece measures approximately 22" x 21".

I continue to make felt while the sun shines!  The beautiful weather definitely inspired the bright sunny colours in this tangled garden.The  piece was entirely wet felted, then embellished with beads and machine stitching to add some extra depth.  The hanging measures approximately 22" x 16 1/2" - branch included!

Wet Felted Wall Hanging (or.....)

I'm so grateful to be able to work outside during these warm summer days we've been blessed with!

I created this sunny piece of felt with the intention of making it into a wall hanging - but I think it would also make a lovely cushion cover (if someone was so inclined!).  The entire piece was wet felted; and embellished with machine stitching and just a few little bright beads on each flower, just to catch the light.

I loved the whole process of designing this wall hanging.  The whole piece, including the floral design, was wet felted; then embellished with machine stitching to add depth, and tiny beads to catch the light.  I took it to market today with the intention of getting some good photographs - but it sold so quickly I only had time to snap a few shots before wrapping it for the customer!
