This design was inspired by an heirloom design, and - unlike my more primitive designs -  it's a bit of a departure for me.  The lovely floral bouquet against a cheery yellow background would look especially lovely in a sunroom, or on a big comfy chair in a baby's room!

Upcycled Felted Sweater "Mug Rugs"

My neighbour Suzanne is a wonderful fibre artist but, since her interests have gone in a new direction, she's been sharing her wealth of supplies - wool, yarn, rovings etc.  - with me.  Recently, she gave me a couple of partially finished wool sweaters that she vowed she'd never complete.  So I felted the wool and made a few sets of "mug rugs" . Suzanne's work is extremely intricate, and I love both her designs and her colours.

Each piece is double thickness; and finished with a complementary blanket stitch.

Wool Hot Pads & "Mug Rugs"

I knew there was still a bit of life left in the beautiful striped burgundy and green blanket!  After disposing of the "holey" bits, I was able to make five sets of 4 coasters (mug rugs); and six hot pads.  Each item is double-thickness, machine stitched, and then finished off with a complementary blanket stitch edging.

The rich colours in these pieces would add lots of life to a rustic environment.....

Another hint of the coming spring? The delicate periwinkle flowers on this piece were hooked with pure wool blue heather yarn on burlap.

Spring must be in the air!   I suddenly find myself drawn to creating more colourful florals in my work.    The flowers in this piece were hooked in purple and blue pure wool 'heather' yarns on burlap; the background is a combination of soft blues and greens.

Heirloom Rug Hooking Patterns

I usually design my own rug hooking patterns, but I was recently given this lovely piece of burlap with five "hot pad" designs from Heirloom Rugs in Providence R.I.  I love the intricate designs!  I've completed two of the designs:  The sunflower was hooked with recycled wool fabrics; the delicate periwinkle floral design was hooked with wool yarn.  As soon as all the designs have been hooked, and bound, I'll post the finished pieces.

The Promise of Spring!

This happy little rug hooked bunny would be a sweet addition to a  nursery or child's room!  The diminutive wall hanging was hooked with wool yarn on burlap.

Floor Cloths

Floor cloths add warmth to cold or bare floors, stand up to years of heavy traffic, and can be wiped clean with a damp mop.  Traditionally designed on canvas, I use the reverse side of commercial flooring remnants as my canvas - thus keeping these bits out of the landfill!  I incorporated discarded upholstery samples to create the quilted effect of these cloths, and finished the pieces with several coats of polyurethane for protection and easy cleaning.
